Trip Information:

PVFF Spring steelhead April 9-10
UPDATE
The Catt is currently running high at about 700fps (2.5 feet). It would need to drop to at least 600fps but the weather doesn't look promising for next weekend. Snow and rain showers throughout the week with low overnight temps in the teens although Sunday looks like the best day. My experience tells me that the water will not drop much this week based on the predicted precip throughout the week. At this point, I don't think I will be heading up there on Friday. We will have keep our eye on the water levels through April. - Dan

In January, I did a presentation for PVFF on how to plan for steelhead outing. Each year, many PVFF members target PA streams mainly Elk and Walnut creeks while I prefer the opportunities in NY state (Cattaraugus, Canadaway, Chautaugua or Oak Orchard). Anytime, now through April is the time to go. The weekend I have targeted this year for a PVFF spring steelhead trip is the weekend of April 9, 10 - leave Friday return Sunday. The spring steelhead trip is difficult to commit to a date due to the fickle nature of the water conditions in the spring in western New York. If the conditions are not good, I will cancel the trip.

This trip is a good way to learn to fish steelhead without paying a guide, however my neighbor charges $35 a day to fish his section of the river which we may do, again if the conditions are right. If this trip is a go, I will offer my cabin on the Cattaraugus as a base camp. Keep in mind my cabin is simply a dry place to set-up a cot. I have electricity but no running water. There is plenty of room to set up a camper. Some may stay in the Microtel in Springville or reserve a cabin through Cattaraugus Creek Outfitters (http://www.ccoflyfishing.com/index.html) which is just downstream of my property. Anyone interested in the April outing should contact me, I will add you to an e-mail list for updates. Feel free to contact me with any questions. - Dan
